The University of Michigan significantly shapes Ann Arbor's economy. Other employers are drawn to the area by the university's research and development and by its graduates. The 16th-largest metropolitan area in the country, the twin cities have long been noted for their tremendous spirit of civic engagement and cooperation. The Washington DC metro area, comprised of the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia, and Maryland, is home to the nation's capitol, famous historic landmarks, and one of the country’s lowest unemployment rates. Efficient public transportation on the city's Metro makes travel in and out of District easy and eco-friendly. Steady job growth and the almost 50 area colleges and universities make the town especially attractive to young professionals.
