Workshop Requirements

How much does a workshop cost?
They are absolutely free!

How many people do we need to schedule a workshop for us?
We are excited to deliver workshops to both large (50 +) and small (5-10) group sizes. However, we strongly encourage a workshop size of at least 10 participants as the opportunity to learn from your colleagues diminishes with smaller groups.

Got a small group of people (2-5) with a lot of the same questions? Stop in for drop-in advising or schedule a group counseling session with one of our counselors!

How much advanced notice should I give when requesting a workshop?

For our most popular workshops, we ask for at least one week’s notice to schedule a workshop. For one of our other more targeted workshops, two weeks notice is required for us to customize the workshop to your group’s needs (these workshops all have asterisks next to them).

It is our hope to meet all requests that provide one week (for the most requested workshops) or two weeks (for all other workshops) advance notice. However, due to staff availability we cannot always guarantee your group’s requested date or time.

Can faculty and staff request workshops too?
Absolutely! We are very excited about delivering our workshops in the classroom setting. We’ll work with faculty and staff to customize our workshops to meet your students’ needs (remember: customization requires a little extra lead time in scheduling – plan ahead!). And then sit back, take a break, and let us lead your class for a day (or part of a day – if you’ve got a three hour class!)

Can we have The Career Center facilitate more than one workshop?
Sure. We are happy to come back for repeat workshops or to deliver different workshop. However, if the demand for our workshops is greater than our ability to deliver them in a timely basis, preference will be given to first time requesters as well as based on the number of participants.

About the Workshops

Can The Career Center tailor one of your workshop for our group’s specific needs?
Yes. We realize that workshops need to be flexible to meet the needs of different groups, including time requirements, activities and a whole host of other factors. We are happy to work with you to make sure the workshop is relevant to your group and fits within your time requirements.

I’d like to do a workshop, but I don’t see it on the list. Will The Career Center create one for us?
It is possible. We’re happy to work with you to customize a workshop if it is related to our areas of expertise. Fill out the online request form and we will discuss the possibility with you. Some topics that are very specific and require considerable prep time may take more than the typical one to two weeks. We look forward collaborating with you!

How long do workshops typically last?
We have designed most workshops to last about one hour. We are happy to shorten workshops or lengthen them to meet your needs. We will talk about time constraints during our initial phone conversation or meeting.

Scheduling Process

I just submitted the Online Request Form. What happens next?
Congratulations! You’ve taken the first steps in providing an exciting workshop to your group/organization. You will receive an email from The Career Center confirming receipt.

When should I expect a call from the Workshop Facilitator?
We are committed to responding to your request within 3 business days. A Workshop Facilitator will contact you to make the arrangements.

Can I have the workshop at any time or any day of the week? How about weekends?

Yes, we can schedule workshops mornings, afternoons or evenings, weekends and weekdays! We may have a hard time finding a staff member to facilitate a 2:00am workshop request, but in general we are very flexible.

I want to hold a workshop but I don’t know where I can do it?
You have a number of options for your workshop location: Dorms, classrooms, fraternities/sororities, meeting rooms in one of the Michigan Unions (The Union, Pierpont Commons, Michigan League). Information on scheduling rooms on campus

Is it possible to hold a workshop at The Career Center?

Consider The Program Room at The Career Center. The Program Room can accommodate about 40 people comfortably. Work with your Workshop Facilitator to find a time when the Program Room is available.

I have a small organization I’d like to coordinate a workshop for.
Is there a possibility of having a workshop with other small organizations? No matter the size of your organization, if you’d like to open your workshop to the general student body, we are happy to help you market it the general student population!

Can we request a specific Workshop Facilitator?
Yes. However, you will need to be flexible in terms of scheduling to accommodate the facilitator’s availability.

Workshop Requester Responsibilities

If I request a workshop, what am I responsible for?
Great question. You, as our Workshop Requester, are responsible for several tasks to help ensure the workshop is a tremendous success:
• Requesting the workshop through our Online Request Form
• Working with the Career Center Workshop Facilitator to confirm the appropriate workshop and identify ways to customize the workshop as appropriate
• Reserving space for the room and confirming the reservation with the Facilitator
• Ensuring your friends, colleagues, group members are at the workshop! (i.e., advertise, advertise, advertise – and remind too!)
• Providing feedback on the workshop to help us continually improve.
